Formed in the late 1800′s in America by the merger of the Wernicke Furniture Company and the Globe Company, Globe Wernicke are best known for their high end bookcases, desks, and other office furniture.

Typically referred to as a sectional, stacking or barristers bookcase, today “Globe Wernicke” is synonymous with a specific style of modular bookcase with a width of 34 inches and fall-front glass doors that cover the shelves.

This bookcase also had an ingenious support mechanism for the doors that allowed the bookcase doors to lift upwards and slide into the ceiling of each shelf above the books or content of the case.

The bookcase was designed so that the sections may be stacked in different ways, to adjust the depth and height of the bookcase, allowing them to be adapted to practically any space, and can always be added to…”always complete but never finished” !

We just couldn’t resist the opportunity to acquire these, as not only do they evoke wonderful childhood memories, but they are also a charming, stylish and practical pair of kids chairs. Clarks is one of the more distinguished, iconic and treasured British brands that dates back nearly 200 years. These vinatge childs leather tub chairs likely date from around the 1950-60′s and are in excellent condition – and what’s interesting is that the kids who sat in these chairs in the 60′s, still try to sit in them when they visit our shop today…by the way, I have tried, and no I didn’t fit!

…at first we needed to confirm that it was silver, it was! Next came the arduous task of attempting to figure out what each mark was and trying to match them with a potential purity, country, city, maker, and date. After continuously hitting brickwalls down dead-end streets, we finally happened upon a likely and truly wonderful answer, courtesy of a genius that goes by the alias “dognose”!

And it’s as simple as looking at the marks literally, i.e. as a rebus…

Mark #1 = GS, probably the maker but possibly the recipient

Mark #2 = an eye (“I”)

Mark #3 = a winged figure, probably Cupid (“Love”)

Mark #4 = the letter U (“You”)

So on this occasion, it would appear that the hallmarks reveal little about the origin of the silver spoon, but perhaps a good deal more about those gifting and receiving it?

Well finally we’ve progressed from saying “wouldn’t it be a good idea for us to get a Refined presence on facebook and twitter” to actually getting a presence on facebook and twitter…and this alongside a redesign of the Refined blog courtesy of Shutterwing! It might take a wee while to figure out how everything dovetails together (no furniture pun intended), but I’m sure we will get there, and then the real journey begins!
